Principal Jason Finnie has announced the six senior class finalists for the Golden Achievement Award: Leah Santiago, Nicole Hannigan, Ariana Marchese, Chloe Govoni, Katrina Nakaya and Leo Balboni. The Golden Achievement Award is Gateway’s most prestigious award and recognizes a member of the senior class who demonstrates outstanding leadership, scholarship and service throughout their high school career. The six nominees are selected by the senior class and the faculty will make the final determination of the winner.

Gateway Regional Athletic Director Matt Bonenfant has been named the 2021-22 Massachusetts Secondary School Athletic Directors Association (MSSADA) District 1 Athletic Director of the Year as announced by the organization. District 1 makes up Berkshire, Franklin, Hampden and Hampshire counties.

During the week of 11/29/21 the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education’s Office of Public School Monitoring (PSM) will conduct a Tiered Focused Monitoring Review of Gateway Regional School District. The Office of Public School Monitoring visits each district and charter school every three years to monitor compliance with federal and state special education and civil rights regulations. Areas of review related to special education include student assessments, determination of eligibility, the Individualized Education Program (IEP) Team process, and IEP development and implementation. Areas of review related to civil rights include bullying, student discipline, physical restraint, and equal access to school programs for all students.

The National Honor Society (NHS) announced that Parker Atkin, a high school senior at Gateway Regional and member of NHS, has been selected as an NHS Scholarship semifinalist. Atkin was chosen from nearly 10,000 applicants and will receive a $3,200 scholarship toward higher education.

State Senator Adam G. Hinds (D-Pittsfield) presented Gateway Regional High School in Huntington, Massachusetts and Mohawk Trail Regional High School in Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts with the $3 million allocated to the Rural School Aid grant program in the FY20 Senate Budget. The grant will bring more than $1 million to schools in his district.

Becca Hyjek’s soccer career began when she played on the boys team with her twin brother Ben at the age of 6.

They continued to play together growing up, often coached by their dad. According to Ben, Becca was always one of the best players on the team. She recalled a special twin symmetry that led to a lot of goals.

Littleville PreK openings

Huntington – The Preschool program at Littleville Elementary has openings in its afternoon preschool program for children who be age 4 on or before September 1, 2019. The program is free.

Children will attend on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 12:40 – 3:10 p.m. Families must provide transportation to and from preschool (there is no bus available).

A preschool screening is required for enrollment. Fall screenings will take place on August 28. The first day of preschool will be Wednesday, September 4.

Athletic Director Matt Bonenfant has asked that students intending to play Gateway Fall Sports (boys/girls soccer and cross-country running) please sign up no later than Friday, August 17. Tryouts begin on Thursday, August 23. Gateway Regional HS sports are open to students in grades 6 - 12.

The YMCA of Greater Westfield has announced that they are unable to offer a "Y's Kids" program for students attending Gateway Regional Middle School in the Fall, due to low enrollment. A minimum number of students had to be signed up for the program to run, which we did not reach--despite an extended deadline. Families who signed up and paid a deposit will be contacted by the YMCA about returning their checks.

At this point, we have 5 families signed up for the Y's Kids Afterschool Program. If we are able to offer this program, it would be run by the YMCA of Greater Westfield at Gateway Regional Middle School, every day after school until 6 p.m.

We need to have 10 sign-ups in order to run this program. The YMCA has graciously extended the deadline to Friday, July 13. Completed packets must be at the YMCA, along with a $75 deposit, by Friday.

Families may sign up for 2, 3, 4 or 5 days a week.

All schools will be closed April 16 - 20 for spring break. Offices will be closed on Monday, April 16 for Patriot's Day.

Wrap Around will be open all week from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. as long as enough children are pre-registered. Please send children with a lunch and two snacks, dressed to go outdoors. Registration forms will be coming home in red folders. Families who pre-register, but do not attend, will still be charged.

Students, staff, parents, community members and town officials are all invited to a Public Hearing on the 2018-2019 school year budget, on Wednesday, March 7 at 7:00 p.m. in the Gateway Performing Arts Center.

This hearing is sponsored annually by the Gateway Regional School Committee, to offer an opportunity for the public to weigh in on the proposed budget. By law, the school committee must adopt a budget 45 days before the first town meeting date, and input from the public hearing will be considered before the March 14 vote.

Also on the agenda will be a discussion on piloting a new town assessment process that would avoid big changes in assessments to the towns from year to year.

Budget information is located on the Gateway website.

The Gateway Performing Arts Center is located in the Middle/High School building on Littleville Road in Huntington. The doors to the auditorium are just inside the main entrance of the building. Parking is available in the front parking lot.

Efforts by alum Jeff Penn (GRHS ’80) and local businessman Andy Myers have led tothe successful launching of a new Outdoor Club at Gateway Regional High School. Accomplishments this year include finding an adviser, having over 30 students sign up, setting up a wildlife camera on school grounds, winning start-up grant funding from the Wild and Scenic Westfield River Committee and completing several hikes and excursions.

The team spent three days at UMASS last week, testing their knowledge of world and historic events.

Eighth Grade students have used their Project-Based learning (PBL) Class to explore the political process; this unit of study culminated with presentations on their newly designed political parties at their October 18th Open House.

Sixth graders have completed a STEM unit of study designed to have students work collaboratively in teams and use the engineering design process to solve several real-world problems.

Gateway is pleased to welcome 7 new staff to the district this year: Kaitlin Ames, Christine Bell, Mary Lyons, Christopher Mosher, Marcie Powers, and Alexandra Thompson are all joining the faculty and staff, along with new Pupil Services Director Kurt Garivaltis.

Gateway's After-School Program grant for middle school students was not renewed, officials learned last Friday. Planning is underway for offering a program without the $200k in funding from the grants.

Teachers return on Friday, August 26. Students return on Tuesday, August 30. Elementary Schools will now be PreK - 5; grades 6-8 will be the new Middle School (and run on the high school schedule); 9-12 remains the high school. The Gateway Regional School Committee voted to hire Kurt Garivaltis as their new Pupil Services Director, replacing Alice Taverna who retires this month.

Students at Gateway elementary schools were rewarded for reading throughout the school year at special assembies, where summer reading was announced, promoted and will be rewarded when students return. 

Principal Megan Coburn is pleased to announce the awarding of the school's "Excellent and Good Effort Awards" for the final term of the 2015-16 academic year. 

Sixth graders at Gateway Regional Middle School took to various engineering design projects as the school year wound down, to apply STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) learning from their studies).

The "Graduation Issue" of Breaking News is now posted!

The approval of the Gateway FY'17 budget in four towns means that cost savings changes for the coming year will move forward, including 5th graders staying at their elementary schools, grades 6-8 reforming into a middle school, not replacing some retiring staff members, and the buildings closing next year at 9 p.m.

The Western Massachusetts Student Advisory Council welcomed its new members recently and held regional elections, with Gateway junior Rachel LeBarron selected as Regional Co-Chair to the Council. 

The Gateway Class of 2016 will graduate on Friday, June 3 at 6 p.m. in an outdoor ceremony on Booster Field (weather permitting).

If the weather does not cooperate, the ceremony will be moved indoors to the Gateway Performing Arts Center. Seating will be limited to ticket-holders only, but the event will be simulcast onto a large screen in the high school gymnasium for additional guests.

Speeches will be given by the Class President, Valedictorian and Salutatorian, with remarks from Principal Jason Finnie and Superintendent Dr. David Hopson. The guest speaker for commencement will be Mr. Gabriel Palazzi, Class of 1984.  

Senior awards—including the Valedictorian, Salutatorian and Golden Achievement winners—will be announced at the awards ceremony on Wednesday, June 1 at 11:45 a.m. in the Gateway Performing Arts Center. A reception for the class and their families will be held in the Gateway courtyard immediately following the assembly.

Littleville and Chester Elementary Schools host their annual Open Houses this week. Littleville's Open House is Wednesday, September 23 at 6 p.m. Chester's is the following evening.

Together, the programs provide comprehensive health care, counseling and dental care to Gateway students. Operated by Hilltown Community Health Centers, these programs can be the medical and dental "home" for your Gateway student!

Principal Jason Finnie has announced the five senior class finalists for the Golden Achievement Award:  Kenneth Bourdon, Davis Britland, Brennan Foley, Jenna Margarites and Christian Tweed. The Golden Achievement Award is Gateway’s most prestigious award and recognizes a member of the senior class who demonstrates outstanding leadership, scholarship and service throughout their high school career. The five nominees are selected by the senior class and the faculty will make the final determination of the winner.

A dozen juniors from Gateway Regional High School were inducted into the Dana O. Webber Chapter of the National Honor Society on April 27.

Chester and Littleville Elementary Schools each held school-wide literacy nights this fall, enjoying huge involvement from Gateway families!

Led by its Student Council, Gateway Regional High School students donated over 900 food items for the Huntington Food Pantry, located at the Pioneer Valley Assembly of God Church.

Gateway students don't simply write papers or take tests to demonstrate learning: increasingly they use video, audio or even digital cartooning to share knowledge. The Gateway Library has begun to house some of these student projects, and families and community members are welcome to take a look or listen!

A Preschool Parent Information Night will be held on Tuesday, May 8 from 6 - 7 p.m. in the PreK room at Liittleville Elementary School. Childcare will be provided. Read on....

Homecoming is this weekend and everone is invited to the Concert, soccer games, tag sale and Sunday brunch!

Officials from DESE's Office of Digital Learning visited Gateway classrooms on June 1 to learn more about how teachers and students are using technology, and how Gateway utilized it's $160,000 Digital Connections Partnerships Grant awarded two years ago.

The Gateway Regional School Committee will host its annual Staff Honors Reception on Wednesday, May 25 from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. in the Gateway courtyard. This annual event recognizes retiring staff as well as those who have earned ‘outside’ awards.

Retiring staff members are Joanne Blocker, Sue Bloomrose, Karen Chaffee, Donna Cranson, Linda Dugas, Gary Huff, Rod Kleber, Deb Olander and Alice Taverna. Rod Kleber will also be recognized as the recipient of this year’s Pioneer Valley Excellence in Teaching award. Outstanding achievements will also be honored: Coach Jared Heeter for receiving the HFBLIA Sportsmanship Award (first time a first-year coach has received this) and high school guidance counselor Meghan Wasiak for the Massachusetts Rising Star Award.

The Gateway Regional School District wants parents to know that the district has protocols in place to deal with a range of emergencies. Based upon public reaction on social media during a lockdown earlier this spring, Safety Coordinator Joyce Hanousek wants to explain some of the terms to parents and community members.

Ford of Northampton will be at Gateway Regional on Saturday, May 7 to do a “Drive 4 Ur School” fundraiser. Organizers hope to make history by raising $6,000 that day--the cap allowed by Ford Motors, and one that has never been reached in Hampshire County.

Licensed drivers (aged 18 and older) are invited to come to Gateway between 10 a.m. and 5p.m. to test drive a new Ford car, truck, hybrid, etc. Ford will pay the Gateway Education Foundation $20 for each driver who completes at least one test drive and turns in their completed feedback form.

“Doing the math, you see that we need at least 300 people to come to Gateway on May 7,” noted Shirley Winer, President of the Gateway Education Foundation.  “It won’t take much time out of people’s day, and it’s a great way to try out a range of vehicles without traveling too far to do so.”

Meghan Wasiak, a guidance counselor at Gateway Regional High School, received the Rising Star Award from the Western Massachusetts Counseling Association, then went on to win at the state level, as well!

The play will be presented by the Junior High School Drama Club on Friday and Saturday night at 7 p.m. in the Gateway Performing Arts Center. Admission is $2 for senior citizens and students, $5 for adults. Anyone bringing gently used clothing to donate to the Project 351 clothing drive will receive a dollar off their admission. The Gateway Regional School Committee will host their annual Staff Honors Reception, starting at 6 p.m. in the Gateway Courtyard on Wednesday, May 23. Eleven staff members will be honored for retirements and for special achievements.

Retiring staff to be honored include: Thomas Burns and Bob Keay, custodians; Maureen Kaminski, Peggy Leganza, Cheryl Meskevich and Alma Owen, paraprofessionals; Debra Robbins, high school secretary; Wendy McCaul, food services director; and Patricia Diefendorf (8^th grade science) and Daniel Shea (high school science), teachers.  Denae Kessel Dostal, recipient of this year’s Pioneer Valley Excellence in Teaching Award, will also be recognized.

On Thursday, May 10, the Gateway Regional High School Music Department will host their annual Spring Concert. Join the bands and choirs in the Gateway Performing Arts Center at 6:30 p.m. for a performance that showcases the high school’s many talented students! This year’s concert includes the band performing an original student composition and a musical instrument drive to help students who want to join the band, but don’t have access to an instrument.

Save the Date for Gateway Sports Banquet

Huntington –The Gateway Athletic Booster Club is sponsoring the Annual Sports Banquet for all student athletes, coaches and teams. This year’s banquet will be a brunch on Sunday May 6, beginning at 10:30 a.m. at East Mountain Road Country Club in Westfield.

Tickets are $20 for student athletes, $25 for adults, and coaches are free! Tickets may be purchased from Karen Malinowski in the Gateway Pupil Services Office (room 100 across from the cafeteria).

The Annual Sports Banquet includes recognition of all sports, including regular and post season team and individual awards. Scholarships are also awarded to graduating senior athletes (application required).

Tickets must be purchased by Thursday, May 3.

Gateway's Model United Nations (MUN) club is offering their annual International Dinner on Thursday, April 5. Featuring multicultural food and traditions, the event will run from 4:30 - 6 p.m. Admission is $5 for students, $8 for adults. This fundraiser helps defray the cost of Model UN conferences.

A survey has been mailed to all known families living in a Gateway member town (Blandford, Chester, Huntington, Middlefield, Montgomery or Russell) to see if there is interest in a tuition-based, full day Preschool program.

The Gateway Education Foundation has announced that it has funded two additional projects, bringing the total to 60 projects totaling $37,500. Littleville received a $500 award for their annual summer reading challenge; the middle school music program received $550 to start a ukulele program for non-band students.

Gateway's team faces Southwick-Tolland Regional School District on Saturday, January 14.

All schools and offices in the Gateway Regional School District will be closed from December 26, 2016 through January 2, 2017 for the annual holiday break.

The Gateway Wellness Center will be closed on Saturday, December 24; Monday, December 26; Saturday, December 31; and Monday, January 2. Weekday operations will be 5:30 – 7 a.m. and 3:30 – 6:30 p.m. (Tuesday – Friday). The Center will resume regular winter hours on Tuesday, January 3 when schools reopen.

The Littleville Wrap Around Program will be closed on December 26 and January 2nd. It will be open all of the other weekdays (December 27 – 30), as long as enough families pre-register. Families are reminded to pack a lunch and two snacks for each child attending.

The retired air force reserve flight nurse has found a home at the Gateway School-Based Health Center and Hilltown Community Health Center.

Citing the rights of all students to high-quality public schools with local accountability, and the drain of resources away from public schools by Charters, the Gateway school committee voted September 28 to oppose Question 2, which would lift the cap on the number of Charter Schools in the state. 

The Gateway Education Foundation is in the news this week for awarding $5,000 to 7 teacher-led projects, and for receiving $5,200 from the Ford Motor Company.

Students who completed and returned their summer reading assignment received two books (paid for by the Gateway Education Foundation), a certificate and a prize. And the class that had 100% participation earned a special popcorn party!

The Gateway Food Services Department has a number of announcements to share, including staff certifications, fresh foods, and meal prices.

The Third Annual Vocabulary Parade was held at LIttleville on June 3. The idea comes from the children's book, "Miss Alaineus: A Vocabulary Disaster" by Debra Frasier.

A university band director (retired) and a master choreographer visited Gateway in recent weeks, in time to impact the high school's Concert Band and Show Choir as they headed into regional competitions. 

The annual showcase of the high school Show Choir and Jazz Band starts at 7 p.m. in the Gateway Performing Arts Center. Admission (at the door) is $4 for adults, $2 for students and senior citizens.

It all started with a letter to Principal Megan Coburn in 2014, written by Jennifer Bak's first grade classroom at LIttleville Elementary School. How the best ideas are seen through to fruition!

Ready to get out after being cooped up all winter? Consider Friday night's spaghetti dinner at 6:30 p.m. ($5) followed by the Cabin Fever Concert (7:30 p.m., Gateway Performing Arts Center, free).

Two holiday concerts will be held next week! The first, by musicians in grades 5-8, is scheduled for Monday, December 14 at 7 p.m. High school musicians take the stage on Thursday, December 17 at 7 p.m. The Choirs host a Soup & Salad Supper on Monday, preceding the MS/JRHS Concert.

In recognition of the unique bond between children and their grandparents or grandfriends, Littleville and Chester  Elementary Schools held their annual “Grandparents & Grandfriends” Day on Wednesday, November 25. Over 200 grandparents/grandfriends attended at Littleville; over 75 were on hand at Chester ES.

Principal Jason Finnie has announced the first term Honor Roll for Gateway Regional High School. 

"I don't usually eat with anybody at this table," reported one 7th grader. "I just wanted to try it."

Athletic Director Matt Bonenfant has announced the senior nights for the fall sports teams at Gateway Regional High School.

Last spring, custodian Joanne Frappier mentioned to her sister (Rosalie Barber of Russell) that the flag at Littleville Elementary was showing some wear due to weather and age. She couldn't have imagined what would happen next, thanks to her nephew--Donnie Barber, GRHS Class of '79--who had been on active duty at Camp Morehead in Afghanistan and was now serving as a civilian contractor there.

After'School Programs at Gateway Regional Middle School and Jr. High School will begin on Monday, September 21. Thanks to a partnership with Mass Fish & Wildlife, the JRHS program will offer archery!

The District was notified on June 29 that the DESE had approved a 1/12th budget effective July 1 based upon the adopted FY'16 budget that the school committee originally sent to the towns for approval.

Gateway’s MIAA Student Ambassadors are running a “Socktober Challenge” at the school in support of World Homeless Day this month.They have organized a sock drive until October 18. Socks will be brought to MIAA at their Fall Huddle of student ambassadors on October 19.

The YMCA of Greater Westfield is offering a "Y's Kids" program after school for students attending Gateway Regional Middle School this fall, as long as enough parents sign up by June 29.

On Saturday, January 14, Gateway students Dawson Atkin and Anna Pless performed in the Western Massachusetts Music Educators District Festival Band, in a concert that took palce at UMASS/Amherst. Gateway's Communications Council and Technology Department have created a new mobile APP that can be downloaded for free from the Google Play (Android) or App Store (iPhone, iPad); just search for Gateway Regional School District. Last week was College Week for the high school. Workshops were held all week, including submitting the common application and on-the-spot acceptance from Holyoke Community College, Springfield Technical Community College, Western New England University and American International College. A new component of this annual event was the Massachusetts College Acceptance Celebration--honoring the 43 applications submitted and accepted by colleges visiting that day.

Sophomore Dawson Atkin missed performing with the high school band at graduation last week, in order to attend the 2016 MassSTAR Citizenship Conference held the weekend of June 3. Last year's delegate, Anna Pless, Returned this year as a Jr. Facilitator.

Two Gateway 8^th graders—Maria Pless and Alexandra Russell--were chosen to be soloists at a behind the scenes workshop of Broadway’s “Phantom of the Opera”.  “It was really nerve wracking and definitely a surprise,” said Pless. “It was fun and unexpected,” added Russell.

The girls were plucked from an audience of choral groups from New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts for the Broadway Choral Workshop, which was led by the music director of the “Phantom of the Opera”.

Chester Elementary students will present “Let’s Eat: A tasty musical for anybody who loves food!” on Thursday, April 28 at 6:30 p.m. in the Gateway Performing Arts Center. This event was funded by the Gateway Education Foundation and is free and open to the public.

A group of crazy characters—including Hungry Hannah, Famished Francine, Ravenous Ramona, and Picky Patty—will sing all about their unyielding appetites!

Two events precede the musical: the Gateway Education Foundation is hosting a reception at 5:30 p.m. for donors and supporters on the second floor above the foyer. Light refreshments will be served, so come and see what the Foundation’s been up to and learn more about their upcoming events.

Also, a student art show will be held form 6 – 6:30 p.m. in the Gateway foyer. Student artwork by 3^rd and 4^th grade art students at Chester Elementary School will be displayed.

Students, staff and parents showed up last week for a half-night sleepover at Littleville, wearing jammies and toting blankets, flashlights and stuffed animals!

The high school guidance department is offering the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) Career Exploration Program to all interested juniors and seniors on Wednesday, April 6. Students will not attend school on Monday, March 7 due to Parent-Teacher Conferences. Parents must make an appointment for a conference, which is an important opportunity for parents to meet with their child's teachers, find out how their child is doing in different subject areas, and talk about any concerns that are seen at home or school. 

All parents in the Gateway Regional School District are invited to the "lowering the Volume--Part 2" workshop on discipline, de-escalation and behavior management at home. The Boston Celtics have selected the Gateway Education Foundation to benefit from their charitable organization this year. Tickets are now on sale for a game in Boston on January 29. Order forms and payment ($30 per seat, payable to the Boston Celtics) must be in by December 22.

Gateway Regional is the last district in Massachusetts to have an approved budget. NOW MORE THAN EVER: this is a great time to support the Gateway Education Foundation, which is taking part in "Giving Tuesday", now through December 1.

Gateway Athletic Director Matt Bonenfant has announced that tryouts for the winter sports season will begin on Monday, November 30 with times to be announced. Gateway offers programs in basketball, downhill skiing and wrestling for boys and girls in grades 7-12.

A free parent workshop on discipline, de-escalation and behavior management in the home will be held at Gateway on Tuesday, November 17 at 6:30 p.m.

Students and staff in the Gateway Regional School District enjoyed 'Farm to School Week' last week with fresh foods from area farms featured in the lunch menu.

The Gateway Education Foundation funded 7 new classroom projects totaling just over $3000 at its Board of Directors meeting on September 21. Since starting its Funds for Learning program in September 2012, the Foundation has funded 34 projects totaling over $22,500.

“We are pleased to have come this far,” noted the Foundation’s president, Shirley Winer. “But the teachers whose applications were not selected for funding would tell you that there’s more to do.”

The School Committee has lowered student parking fees for the 2015-2016 school year. 

Last Day of School for Gateway

Huntington – Barring a broken water main or power outage, the last day of school for students in the Gateway Regional School District will be Thursday, June 14. The last two days of school will be half-days for students, with MS/HS dismissal at 10:35 a.m. Chester and Littleville Elementary School students will be released at 11:40 a.m.

Lunch is not served on half-days, but breakfast will be available on both days.

The last day of Preschool will be Friday, June 8.

Schools will reopen for students on Wednesday, August 29.

– Littleville Elementary School first and second graders will present SWAMPED!  - a musical about friendship, tolerance and change – in the Gateway Performing Arts Center on Thursday, May 17. Curtain rises at 6:30 p.m. for this free musical performance and everyone is invited.

A student art show precedes the concert and opens at 6 p.m.

Swamped!  tells the story of preparations for an upcoming party that go amiss as different creatures encounter challenges: the turtles are late, the bullfrog is bullying, tadpoles are growing limbs (gasp!) and the dragonfly larvae are afraid to spread their wings and fly.

The musical is directed by music teacher Renee Mosher; the art show by Amy Thornton.

A bag of beautiful, hand-knit mittens, scarves and hats was found in a storage closet this fall, and making winter a little warmer for Chester families!

Eighth grader Mackenzie Chase is leading a collection to benefit the animals at the Westfield Animal Shelter (items selected through December 21) and Littleville and Chester Elementary School are collecting pajamas for a special cause (closes December 13).

"I like how empowered she (Annie) was. She had such strength behind everything she said. There was such purpose. She wanted us to understand and convey the power we have over our own lives and to never give up," said Gateway freshman, Livia Shepard, after her inspirational video conferencing visit with Annie Bleiburg. "Peter Pan and Wendy" will be presented on May 5 and 6 in the Gateway Performing Arts Center by students and staff at Gateway Regional Middle School. Tickets (at the door) are $3 for students and senior citizens and $6 for adults.

The First Annual Hilltown Chili Challenge will be held on Friday, March 31 from 6 - 8:30 p.m. in the Cafeteria at Gateway Regional High School. Admission is $5 and covers a sampling of up to 20 chili varieties. Competitors, judges needed. Read more!

The Guidance Department is hosting an evening College Planning Workshop for Gateway seniors and their parents/guardians on Monday, September 26 at 6:30 p.m.

All parents/guardians in the Gateway Regional School District are invited to take a survey to help improve district communications.

All schools in the Gateway Regional School District will be closed on Monday, May 30 for Memorial Day. In keeping with recent practice, the Gateway High School Band will perform in the Huntington (8:45 a.m.), Chester (10 a.m.) and Montgomery (noon) parades this year.

Littleville Wrap Around Program will be closed. The Gateway Wellness Center will be closed on Saturday, May 28 and on Monday, May 30.

In 2017, the towns of Blandford and Russell will again have the Gateway band.

Principal Megan Coburn has announced the third term Effort Awards for Gateway Regional Middle School. 

Six student athletes from Gateway Regional High School were honored at the Massachusetts Student-Athlete Citizenship Day held April 15 at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. The event was co-sponsored by the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA), Northeastern University’s Center for the Study of Sport in Society, and the Massachusetts National Guard. 

“It was good. It wasn’t just about sports—it really focused on leadership and community service,” said senior Brennan Foley, a member of the Varsity Soccer Team and Alpine Ski Team. Also attending were Joanna Arkoette (soccer, basketball and softball), Kenneth Bourdon (wrestling), Dayna Britland (softball), Rachel LeBarron (soccer, skiing) and Brett Turban (basketball, baseball). Students were selected by Gateway’s Athletic Director Matthew Bonenfant.

“The day was a series of workshops dealing with leadership and community service. Students shared ideas on ways to help local communities—fundraisers, awareness walks, and volunteerism,” said Michael Forand, Head Wrestling Coach at Gateway who attended with students. Gateway was one of 13 area high schools to take part.

The Keynote Presentation was given by Lieutenant Colonel Jason Oberton, Commander of the Recruiting and Retention Battalion of the Massachusetts Army National Guard.

Students participated in a values inventory workshop, storytelling workshop, and brainstormed community service ideas. They were treated to lunch by Subway, and each received free passes to tour the Basketball Hall of Fame.

The Gateway Theatre Club is pleased to present William Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew” in the Gateway Performing Arts Center on Thursday and Friday, April 14 and 15. The play is directed by Keith Boylan, with senior Ali Doyle the Assistant Director.

The Federation for Children with Special Needs will present a free "Basic Rights in Special Education" workshop at Gateway on Tuesday, March 15 from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. in the high school's distance learning center. Please RSVP if you need child care.

Students in the Gateway Regional School District will have a 2-hour early release on Tuesday, March 8. Lunch is served; no afternoon preschool. Wrap Around is open early; Wellness Center on regular schedule.

Heading into the holiday break, sixth grade students earned a breakfast from  their teachers by creating and sharing book report 'placemats'. Sharing the reviews helped students create reading lists of books that interested them, as they headed into the vacation week. Click here to read more.

The Gateway Regional High School Bands are hosting their annual "Breakfast for Dinner" FUNdraiser on Friday, December 4 from 5:30 - 7 p.m. in the Gateway cafeteria.

Parents/guardians are invited to an Open House at the Gateway Regional campus on October 8, from 6 – 7:30 p.m.  Faculty and staff from Gateway Regional Middle School, Jr. High and Sr. High Schools will be on hand to meet and greet students and their families. A special presentation will also be given for families of students participating in the Chromebook initiative at 7 p.m. in the Gateway Performing Arts Center.

There is no shortage of opportunities at Gateway for parents and community members to support children's education! Learn more about opportunties to serve with other  PTO, library, school council, health advisory council, athletic and music booster club, and school committee volunteers.

Join other area parents for a free workshop series on March 14, 21 and 28 at Chester Elementary School to learn ‘positive discipline’.

Research tells us that children are hardwired from birth to connect with others, and that children who feel a sense of connection to their community, family  and school are less likely to misbehave. To be successful, contributing members of their community, children must learn necessary social and life skills. Positive Discipline is based on the understanding that discipline must be taught and that discipline also teaches.

Free childcare and dinner will be provided to those who attend. Workshops run from 5 – 7 p.m. each night.

An orientation regarding the new Middle School (grades 6-8) for next fall will be held on Wednesday, June 15 from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. in the Gateway Performing Arts Center. 

Musicians at Gateway Regional High School--with special guests from Littleville's first grade--offer a spring concert on Thursday, May 12 at 7 p.m. in the Gateway Performing Arts Center.

Tickets for the annual Gateway Booster Club Sports Banquet are now on sale. The event will be held on Tuesday, May 31 at 6 p.m. at Tekoa Country Club.

Tickets are $10 for athletes, coaches and children under 12, and $25 for adults. Checks should be made out to the “Gateway Booster Club”. The event honors the Gateway athletes, teams and coaches from the 2015-16 school year and will include the announcement of Sr. Scholarships, gifts to graduating seniors, the unveiling of the annual sports video, and a raffle of door prizes for student athletes.

Gateway's six Project 351 Ambassadors for 2015 have launched their service project for the year: a collection of gently used clothing for the charity Cradles to Crayons. Donations will be accepted in the Gateway lobby until April 6. 

Gateway’s Red Cross Club has organized a Blood Drive in the Gateway Regional High School Gym on Friday, March 18 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Those interested may pre-register for an appointment; walk-ins are also welcome!

In a reversal of its earlier decision, the MIAA met recently and repealed a rule that would have not allowed Gateway 7th and 8th graders to participate in high school sports.

The Gateway Regional High School Red Cross Club is hosting a blood drive for the community from 2 – 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 15 in the high school gymnasium.

Students, staff and community members are all invited to participate! You may sign up online by visiting redcrossblood.org with the code GRHS12.

Blood donations help millions in need, most people have blood to spare but, there is still not enough to go around. You can save a life or even two with one donation.

Westfield YMCA class offered at Gateway Wellness Center

Huntington – The YMCA of Greater Westfield is offering a new 8-week session of Functional Training Classes at the Gateway Wellness Center, beginning Thursday, April 26 and running through May 24.

Functional Training Classes consist of exercises that allow people to perform activities of daily life more easily and without injuries. It involves weight bearing activities targeted at core muscles of the abdomen and lower back, and may use battle ropes, kettlebells, free weights, TRX, core bar and more. This class can accommodate all fitness levels and can be modified where needed. YMCA instructor Tony Casale returns to lead this new series!

Two 45-minute classes will be offered at the Huntington site: from 3:15 – 4 p.m. and from 4 – 4:45 p.m. Space is limited to the first 12 who register.

The cost for Westfield YMCA members will be $45 for the entire 8 weeks. Non-members may enroll for $65 (also for the entire 8 weeks). This course is open to all adults in the community.

SENIOR UNVEILS BLOG ON SENIOR YEAR: Gateway senior (and Communications Intern) Audrey Gamble has started a blog to share reflections on her senior year at Gateway Regional High School. The title of her first post, “And Oh, Did I Mention College?,” gives a hint of what she’s been largely focusing on so far this year.
